Summer Splendors
Hiking to the first lake in the Five Lakes Walk had the most breathtaking views I’ve ever seen.
Visiting in summer, I was enchanted by Zermatt’s vibrant alpine meadows and the myriad of outdoor activities available. You can take leisurely hikes or challenging climbs to see the breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding mountains. One notable adventure is the 5 lakes walk (5-Seenweg). While this hike is often advertised as beginner-friendly, I found it to be a bit more challenging than expected. The trail to the first lake is manageable and absolutely beautiful, making it a perfect spot for less experienced hikers to enjoy before turning back. For those seeking more, the full route offers stunning reflections of the Matterhorn in the crystal-clear waters of the lakes, but it can be quite demanding.
Exploring Klein Matterhorn
For those looking to reach new heights, a visit to the Klein Matterhorn is a must. Accessible by the highest cable car in Europe, the journey to the Klein Matterhorn brings you to an awe-inspiring altitude of 3,883 meters. This peak offers an astonishing year-round snow experience and provides some of the most spectacular views of the Alps. At the summit, you can visit the Glacier Palace, a magical world of ice sculptures and tunnels beneath the glacier. It's an exhilarating experience that showcases the beauty and extreme nature of the Alpine environment, making it a highlight of any trip to Zermatt.
Winter Wonders
Views from the top of Gornergrat
In winter, Zermatt transforms into a snow-laden paradise, ideal for skiing, snowboarding, and other snowy adventures. With over 360 kilometers of pistes, it caters to all levels of ski enthusiasts. Don’t miss a ride on the Gornergrat railway, one of the highest cog railways in Europe, offering spectacular views and access to pristine ski areas. After a day on the slopes, unwind in one of the town’s luxurious spas or enjoy a hot chocolate by a roaring fire.
Gornergrat is also a must-do during the summer. The ride not only provides stunning vistas but also brings you close to the panoramic terraces where the alpine environment can be fully appreciated. It’s a spectacular way to spend a sunny day in the Swiss Alps, and I highly recommend it.
Charming Town Delights
Zermatt itself is a car-free zone , which preserves its old-world charm and makes strolling through the town a peaceful experience. Explore the quaint boutiques, visit the Matterhorn Museum to learn about the area's cultural history, and of course, indulge in the local cuisine.
Culinary Journey
For dining, Zermatt boasts a range of options from cozy mountain huts serving traditional Swiss dishes like raclette and fondue to high-end restaurants offering gourmet dining experiences. Additionally, due to Zermatt's proximity to the Italian border, you can also indulge in some amazing Italian cuisine, bringing a delightful Mediterranean flair to the high Alps. I had pizza and pasta in Zermatt that rivaled my favorite meals from any Italian ristorante!
Mont Cervin Palace: A ravioli so delicious, I still dream of it.
